Tapis finished 2018 with a bang as Matthew Nicholls, Director of Sales, led a successful workshop at the Red Cabin “Cabin Innovation & Aircraft Seating Conference” last month in Hamburg, Germany. In addition to Tapis, the conference included speakers from Airbus, Recaro, Etihad, LOT, Acumen, Boeing, Zodiac, JetBlue and more.
Matthew presented the Advanced Materials Workshop in front of more than 100 attendees of airlines, designers, OEM’s and suppliers. The discussion focused on high performance materials: what are they, what does the future hold and where is current research and development taking us? After an introduction to advanced materials and a snapshot on what some of the world’s leading material companies are working on, the attendees split into groups.
Each group was asked to come up with a new “wonder” material to provide a solution for British Airways’ new ultra long haul route….with Christian Sutter from British Airways as the guest judge! The groups then pitched their ideas to Mr. Sutter, who judged the results and gave feedback. There were many tremendous ideas with many pitches focused on passenger well-being and comfort. Smart technology was also a key feature, but the overwhelming key attribute was passenger well-being.
The winning product was an innovative air-bearing cushion technology for lightweight passenger comfort that could adapt inflight to passenger load, and also report on their welfare to the flight crew.
The conclusions drawn from the workshop, with regards to passenger comfort and welfare, tie in to the materials that Tapis continues to introduce to the market, year after year. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Red Cabin in 2019 and beyond.
